Lawmakers weigh shifting retired teachers medical plan costs
The plan would require retirees to pay 0.5 percent of salaries starting July 1, 2003, costing districts about 36.9 million. Moline Superintendent Cal Lee supports the idea as a duty to teachers, while noting a preference to spend on students. Before July 1, 2003 no district cost is required, as 41.4 million can be diverted from the Teachers' Retirement System to health insurance, increasing the retirement system's unfunded liability. State Rep. Doug Hoeft votes no, calling it poor policy. Sen. Denny Jacobs says it buys time for a permanent fix. Mary Ann Platt, vice president.
