VIPs visit Saigon and combat areas as Congress members and governors tour Vietnam. The influx fills bases like the 1st Cavalry and Da Nang Marine posts, with leaders in bush hats and fatigue gear observing operations and posing with troops.
Gov Otto Kerner signals possible call for a special legislative session to raise taxes as December sales tax data loom. He warns Illinois faces a $67 million general revenue deficit by June 1967 and notes payless pay days for state workers without cash to start the new budget period. He rejects waiting for January 1967 and suggests faster tax action may be needed.
A Navy P2V Neptune ditched in the Atlantic twenty five miles off Brunswick. Four men were rescued by a fishing boat and two by a helicopter. One rescued by chopper died. A plane spotted six men on a liferaft. Brunswick Naval Air Station confirmed six aboard.
Defense rested in the murder trial of three white men Elmer L. Cook 42 William Stanley Hoggle 37 and Namon O Neal Hoggle 31 charged in the slaying of Rev. James J. Reed in Selma Alabama The deputy district attorney urged jurors to set aside prejudice and prosecute the killers regardless of opinions about the victim or his work.
Barbara Lovell asks her father astronaut James A Lovell Jr to hurry home for Christmas as Gemini 7 remains in space on its sixth day. Gemini 6 preparations move up, with Capt Walter M Schirra Jr and Maj Thomas P Stafford set to launch Sunday to pursue Gemini 7 in a controlled chase. The plan calls for near contact during a six hour formation to test rendezvous techniques critical to future moon missions. Weather across landing areas looks favorable for Sunday.
President Johnson told AFL CIO leaders from his Texas ranch that the United States will exhaust every peace effort before taking other hard steps in Viet Nam. He praised renewed peace talks but noted Hanoi’s negative response.
Marine forces storm into a three day battle between Da Nang and Chu Lai as helicopters from the carrier Valley Forge lift fresh units into action. They clash with groups of 30 to 40 guerrillas with light American casualties and ongoing air and naval support as they close in on the Viet Cong position.
Four crewmen suspected of tuberculosis were flown to hospitals from the carrier Wasp, Gemini 6 and 7 support ship. Doctors later said 10 others among about 2,800 aboard had contracted TB. No risk to astronauts if they are warmed by the Wasp as planned. The four were flown to Bermuda then St. Albans naval hospital after confirmation of the first case last July.
Reports spread from the Northeast to California of a brilliant fireball seen at dusk. Police counted fires in Ohio and Pennsylvania while scientists noted Geminid activity and possible meteor fragments. Observers in Idaho and Michigan described bright objects and meteor events.
The Navy says it has paused Naval Reserve enlistments after reaching the 126000 authorized strength. Enlistment will resume once the total falls below the limit, with some draftees opting for the Naval Reserve to avoid Army or Marine quotas.
State's Attorney Raymond Terrell filed notice to appeal a November 12 dismissal of the December 1964 indictment of Theodore Isaacs former Illinois revenue director and Kerner campaign manager. Judge Creel Douglass ruled the charges were not sufficiently specific. The grand jury investigated envelope contracts and Isaacs links to Cook Envelope Lithographing Co. of Chicago which did more than $1 million in state business while he served from 1961 to 1963.
A 10 man Argentine scientific team arrived at the South Pole after six weeks of harsh weather. They began from Gen. Belgrano base in Antarctica and faced blizzards and sub zero temperatures on their trek.
The Thames rose to near terrace level at the House of Commons as Parliament debated. Floods hit much of England and Wales with 19 counties reported affected, waters flooding streets, trams, and riverside towns from Kent to Essex.
