Senate urged service cuts to curb university fee hike
Faculty at Southern Illinois University Carbondale urged cuts in service to avoid higher costs for students. The recommendation, passed at a Tuesday meeting, cautions that rising education costs may push students to seek employment rather than pursue college. It also reaffirms opposition to merging the men's and women's intercollegiate athletic programs.

Perry County road layoffs go to binding arbitration
An Illinois Department of Labor arbitrator will hear the Perry County Highway Department dispute over four layoffs from Local 644 of the Laborers' union. Highway Supt Roy Smith and County Board Chairman Tom Moss could not agree on a neutral fifth party, making arbitration the final step in the grievance. Moore asked to meet the arbitrator on December 17 or 18. The layoffs, effective November 20, reduced staff to two supervisors and three union workers. Smith said the moves were seasonal belt tightening under the contract and not political.
