Southern Marshall House in Old Shawneetown is added to the National Register of Historic Places after a push by the Gallatin County Historical Society and the Illinois Bankers Association. The effort highlights Illinois history and the site of the first bank in the state within Randolph County listings.
The Southern Illinois 16 county region reports 144 traffic deaths this year up from 121 last year. Minnie Schmale, 85, of Hoyleton, was killed Tuesday on Route 177 near Hoyleton when struck by a car in a single-vehicle pedestrian accident. The period marked three weeks with no collision fatalities and included the Thanksgiving weekend. state records note prior fatalities on November 13, November 14, and a four-death crash on Route 127 near Du Bois-Oakdale Road.
A car on the Eldorado Ridgway road struck North Fork bridge then plunged over a 70 foot embankment. Active driver Sandra Saves 23 of Ridgway and Jody Melcher 21 of Rosiclare suffered injuries. both taken to Ferrell Hospital Eldorado. Occurred 6 30 p m three miles west of Rt 1.
James Brewton a former Carbondale resident and alleged Black Panther leader had a charge of possession of burglary tools dropped. The dismissal was signed by former state’s attorney Ron Briggs on his departure, described as minor. Brewton remains jailed on Jackson County felony charges including attempted murder kidnapping and two armed robbery counts.
