Carbon dale holds a second annual tree-lighting ceremony at City Park near Washington and Main across from the Illinois Central depot. The event starts at 7 30 p m on Friday with a brass sextet of Carbondale Community High School students led by band director Joseph Shiplett performing holiday music.
In Herrin the Veterans and Widows of World War I hold a pot luck at the Legion Home with a Southern Illinois District meeting at the Senior Citizens Center after. Carbondale hosts a Household Arts Club Christmas party at 505 W. Pecan St. Campbell Hill extends an Extension Unit meeting at the American Legion Hall. Murphysboro gathers for a Triad Extension unit at Cora Lee Lawder’s home. Dowell hosts a Home Extension Unit meeting at Josephine Cornaglias home. Alan Randall will present the Christmas tree to Mayor Keene, who will switch on the lights as Santa arrives to the tune of Jingle Bells with gifts from Downtown Merchants Association. Garden Club Council and Park District back the ceremony with Downtown Merchants Association.
Carbondale daytime Newcomers Club members plan a Christmas party luncheon at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mrs. Herbert Larsen's home 105 S Parrish Lane with Mrs. Larsen and Mrs. Robert Alexander assisting. Questions may be directed to Mrs. Larsen at 549 3933. Southern Illinois University runs an annual Secretarial Seminar to upgrade skills for current secretaries.
The Shaw adaptation by Darwin Payne will be staged for children by the SIU theater department under AAUW sponsorship. Performances run 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in the Communications Building theater with pupils from Carbondale and nearby districts attending on specified days. Season tickets are sold by Mrs. Bessie Warren. car parking behind the building.
The Carbondale Hospitals Auxiliary hosts a Holiday Homes Tour today from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets cost 2 per person and grant access to five homes and tea at Pink Geranium Gift Shop. Homes listed include those of Mrs. Bryant Garrison Goodman Rendleman and Cherry with volunteers and chairmen coordinating teas and routes. Fashion notes predict spring leg wear in sheer soft styles with cuffs and metallic sheen in pastel colors.
Sandra Kay Cheslick and William Carl Warhausen wed Nov 23 at St Marys Catholic Church in Chester. The couple both graduate Chester High School, he later studied at Southern Illinois University and works for Xerox in St Louis. The ceremony featured lace and pearl detailing, a white orchid bouquet, and a reception at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Beta Sigma Phi Beta Eta Chapter in Carbondale conferred the Preceptor Degree on 13 members at a meeting held at Mary Pankey's home. Candle light ceremony honored Thelma Bobbitt Zenna Chammers Mabel Dillinger Ellen Gates Margaret Hendrix Kathryn Martin Chrissie McGowan Letty Ellen Metcalf Mary Pankey Nita Ramsey Clemie Stewart and Jewell Vieceli. Families for International Friendship formed in Carbondale to welcome new SIU international students.
