The Illinois House and Senate backed immediate funds to prevent the Hazel Crest School District 1522 from closing amid a $320,000 payroll shortfall, averting near-term shutdowns for a cash-strapped Cook County district.
Illinois Republicans named State Sen. Frank Watson of Greenville to lead the Senate Republicans as they become the minority in the next Legislature. Watson, 57, will lead starting in January, replacing James Pate Philip who will resign after Republicans lost control in November.

Boss under 21 on January 30, 2001 and letting him depart. Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Mary Anne McMorrow, affirms lower court ruling that the law grants no clear steps to detain an intoxicated minor and thus is invalid.
