SIUC contract talks productive after 3 hours of talks
SIUC Faculty Association and university administration began contract negotiations at 2 p.m. Wednesday and met about three hours. Talks resume Thursday morning with 10 months of bargaining behind them. The 684 union members total on 1,500 faculty, with 75 items on the table and salary increases the main sticking point.

Carbondale halved Lincoln Junior High property sale plan
Carbondale Elementary School District 95 voted to split the nine acre Lincoln Junior High site at 501 S Washington into two lots and a 50 foot right of way. The western lot and right of way will sell to the city for 200000 with a survey and rezoning for high density housing planned. The eastern tract will be bid for sale while the city pursues a police facility project.

Red-Shouldered Hawk Spotted Near Cedar Lake
A red shoulder hawk, uncommon year round, has been seen near Cedar Lake by Ben Gorman. The bird perches on an old boat landing, emits a kee you kee you call, and is described with rufous shoulders, striped tail, and a diet spanning small mammals birds amphibians and insects.
