Congress Acts to Improve Toy Safety in 1969
In 1969 Congress passed the Child Protection and Safety Act empowering the FDA to ban hazardous toys and components. The FDA banned over 1,000 toys over two years, and later the Consumer Product Safety Commission took over toy safety duties May 11. New safety standards require toughness tests for infants toys and promote plastic and cellulosic materials like acetate and propionate. The story notes the oldest recorded snake, a female anaconda, lived 21 years.
