Gasoline Shortage Forces Carbondale Police Cutbacks
Carbondale reduces patrol cars from seven or eight to two regular units as severe gasoline shortages limit city police mobility. Foot patrols replace cars in key areas along with four foot patrol boats. A supervisor’s car remains as backup while backup from university and county authorities is available if needed. City officials warn services will be less readily available and crime prevention patrols drop to one car from three. Gasoline costs have risen, with no nearby suppliers guaranteeing January deliveries.
