SIU E dental school spared by state panel
A state committee for higher education recommended keeping SIU E dental school open while urging modest enrollment cuts at all Illinois dental schools. The panel said SIUE fulfills regional needs and should also reduce operating and capital costs, including a pared down 9 million dollar building project to 5 million. The Illinois Board of Higher Education planned final action in January.

Bondi murder trial opens with statements to be used
Franklin County prosecutors said statements by William Bondi will be used against him in the murder trial. Public Defender Carroll Owens argued Bondi could not form the intent to kill and would seek not guilty verdicts. The body of Genevieve Bondi was found January 3, 1980, in a shallow grave near West Frankfort. Bondi, 28, was last seen December 28, 1979, and surrendered in Seattle April 12, 1981. Selection of the jury was completed.
