Marion seeks better fire rating to cut insurance costs
Marion officials plan a new fire protection rating aiming to reduce premiums by about 10 to 12 percent for commercial and home policies. Mayor Robert Butler said a 6 rating could be achieved with a new $49,000 fire truck, a new station, extended mains, and higher main pressure. A referendum on a $595,000 Memorial Hospital bond is set for Tuesday, with assurances taxes won't rise as the levy will be adjusted to support the bonds.

Harrisburg mine idle as layoff plans loom after contract
The Harrisburg Coal Co. mine near Crab Orchard stays idle though a full contract was offered to 24 union workers. A spokesman said the crew may be cut in half and no date for resuming work was given. The UMWA filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB in St Louis, then cancelled it after officials signed a contract in Vandalia. The mine had been idle since Oct 1 and again after Nov 13 following a nationwide strike and a rejected sweetheart deal paying workers $3 to $4 less daily than the UMWA contract. The Harrisburg miners had earned less than larger companies.
