Millard Blair of Mattoon is held in Centralia awaiting Michigan officers to interview him about a self admitted murder of a couple last October. Blair said he killed a man known as Ben and a woman named Babe after meeting them in Grand Rapids and abducting them in his car. He described burying the bodies in a ravine near a lake north of St Ignace. Michigan police doubt the confession and consider further inquiry.
A cold air mass from northwest Canada pushed into Montana and the Dakotas, producing subzero temperatures including -15 at Cut Bank and -4 at Minot. The chill spread south and east though no heavy snowfall was predicted for the north central region, with near normal conditions elsewhere.

Congress moved toward approving an extra 17.85 billion dollars for defense to counter Soviet aims. The House hearings began led by Rep. Mahon with Defense Secretary Marshall and Gen. Bradley present. The plan allocates 1.05 billion to the Atomic Energy Commission and funds for the army navy air force and Marine corps to expand and equip military forces.
Weirton Steel Co. and the Independent Steel Workers union set the industry high with a 15 cent hourly raise plus a half cent differential by job class. Weirton starts at $1.41 1/2 per hour, compared with $1.31 industry rate, with increases from 15 to 30 cents.
Four witnesses in Ellenton South Carolina report a brilliantly lit flying object seen at 10 45 p m moving up and down and flashing before vanishing. The sighting occurred as the area was being prepared for the Atomic Energy Commission project with construction planned by 1951.
Authorities accepted the Civil Air Patrol offer to send planes in search for missing Western Michigan college coed Carolyn Drown. The 18 year old freshman disappeared in a snowstorm from the campus five days ago and police have found no satisfactory clue.

President Truman acted to establish the Federal Civil Defense Administration and named Millard F. Caldwell Jr. as its administrator at $17,500 a year. The move came as Congress debated a broader civil defense bill, signaling an independent agency to run in an emergency.
Paris reports French Premier Pleven with strong parliamentary backing to confer with Prime Minister Attlee in London. Pleven's cabinet won 347 to 184 in a wide margin, with only Communists and Gaullist followers opposing. Auriol refused resignations, urging a confidence vote instead.
The China Union Press reported that Nationalist guerrillas seized six towns in South China along the Canton-Hankow and Hunan-Kwangsi railroads.
Nine Roman Catholic clergy including a bishop and abbot were convicted in Prague of espionage and high treason in a Vatican plot alleged to topple Czechoslovakia’s Communist government. Sentences ranged from 10 years to life. Jan Opasek received life plus a fine. The nine cooperated with prosecutors and indicated plans to appeal.
The army announced that Christmas furloughs apply to reservists reporting for extended active duty at U S stations, but those ordered to embarkation ports for overseas duty receive no holiday break. The holiday period runs from December 16 through January 1.
Walter S Leinaweaver of Lancaster recalls losing an $18 pay envelope at a box factory 36 years ago. Yesterday a letter arrived with $20 and an apology for the loss, noting forgiveness and goodwill toward the finder.
State selective service announced 2 285 Illinois men to be called for induction between December 4 and 15. Northern boards supply 2 032 to Chicago induction center and Southern boards 253 to St Louis center. North and South will pause December 15 for holidays and resume January 3.
United Press reports Bonn official John J. McCloy says Russia maintains 25 plus combat ready divisions in the Eastern zone able to reach the Rhine quickly. He notes weaker official counts but confirms long standing Soviet strength and potential for rapid westward action with 280,000 to 320,000 troops 1,500 aircraft and 200 tanks in place.
