Illinois closes eight centers plan to move residents
Springfield lawmakers approved a revamped budget deal to block seven state facility closures while a separate plan backed by Gov. Quinn would shut four of eight developmental disability centers and move about 600 residents to private facilities over two years. The process targets shuttering one facility by end of 2012 with about 120 residents moved to community settings. DHS says screening has begun and the plan is an ongoing effort with further work ahead. Rita Burke of the Illinois League of Advocates for the Developmentally Disabled criticized the plan as shameful.
