Conrail fast tracks to abandon Lawrenceville Cairo line
Conrail cites Reagan era freight rail reform to move faster on abandoning the 143 mile Lawrenceville to Cairo line in Southern Illinois. The change allows possible 90 day abandonment after filing and shifts labor protections, with bids from an employee consortium competing against Illinois Railway Users and the Southern Railway System for the line crossing Johnson and Saline counties.
