Catholic Charities to Appeal Ruling on Foster Care Contracts
Catholic Charities plans to appeal Judge John Schmidt’s Aug. 18 ruling that the state may sever foster care and adoption contracts. Attorney Peter Breen said the charity will seek a stay, then reconsideration and an appeal to a state appellate court if denied. The group contends a property interest arose after 40 years of renewals, while the state argues no contract right exists. The state ended $30 million in contracts with four dioceses in July for allegedly discriminatory referrals of unmarried couples under Illinois civil union law.
