Jobless claims offset falling oil prices
The market, thin due to late August and an upcoming Republican convention, drifted as jobless claims rose by 10,000 to 343,000, with hurricane disruptions and waning oil prices offsetting relief over oil declines. The Dow edged down while Nasdaq and S&P were mixed. Oil had peaked near 49 dollars but eased over five sessions.
