Paris recalls liberation with city hall ceremony and flag raise

Paris marked the 60th anniversary of liberation with a City Hall tribute to veterans and Resistance members. President Chirac spoke of France’s renewed place in the world, while a ceremonial Eiffel Tower flag-raising re-enactment honored six firefighters who raised the tricolor in 1944. Capt. Lucien Sarniguet’s vow to restore the flag was recalled by his daughter. Pierre Noel received the Grand Vermeil Medal from Mayor Bertrand Delanoe for his role among surviving firefighters.
