Barney Boren 78 of Herrin died Friday August 24 2001 at home. Funeral services 11 a.m. Monday at Van Natta Funeral Home Herrin with Rev. Paul E Tirey officiating burial in Herrin City Cemetery military rites by VFW and American Legion Posts visitation 5 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials to First Baptist Church Herrin or Hospice of Southern Illinois may be made or gifts accepted at the funeral home. Boren worked at Credit Thrift 1948 1962 later co owned Marion Finance and Jackson and Gray Insurance and B G Young Modern Shop. He served as Williamson County Clerk 34 years the longest serving elected official. He was a Mason Herrin Prairie Lodge 693 over 50 years a VFW life member Herrin Elks member and County Clerks Association. He served in the U S Navy as Yeoman Second Class. Born April 27 1923 in Energy to Effie and Lou Boren both deceased. Survived by wife Joyce Boren Herrin two sons Greg and Margaret Boren Herrin and Richard and Marsha Boren Searcy Arkansas one daughter Sharon and Paul Roach Johnston City one brother Benny Boren Hesperia California one sister in law Mildred and Bill Cooke St Petersburg Florida one brother in law Bobby Jones Johnston City grandchildren Michael Ryan Gretchen Kristen Caitlin Boren and Paul Eugene Joseph Roach two great grandchildren and several nieces nephews and cousins. Two brothers Robert and Earl Boren and one sister Grace Nelson preceded him in death.
