Rights March Site Monuments And Slums Mingle In Capital
Washington braces for a 100000 strong civil rights march to the Lincoln and Washington monuments amid stark contrasts of beauty and squalor. The city, ninth largest with 764000 residents, shows rising racial tension, crime, and housing discrimination, while Congress controls District affairs and funds. Rights Fund Rally Fails at Polo Grounds Seekers Fall Short
New York August 26 AP A rally at the Polo Grounds to raise funds for Wednesday's civil rights march on Washington drew only about 2,002 attendees through turnstiles with 429 officials and newsmen via press gate. Organizer Edward L. Nelson of the New York Association of Elks said the event cost $40,000 and predicted 30,000 would attend. He blamed poor publicity and lack of door to door promotion for the small turnout and noted the march organizers offered only endorsement, not action, for the rally.
