Conservation Groups Fear Exports Drive Soil Erosion Rise
Washington AP conservative groups warn that expanding U S commodity exports could accelerate topsoil loss over the next 50 years. A Agriculture Department report estimates annual erosion dumping 1.9 billion tons on cropland and projects cropland shrinking from 413 million to about 369 million acres by 2030 unless productivity and conservation keep pace.

USDA Opposes Bills Requiring Imported Meat Labels
The Agriculture Department opposes congressional bills that would force restaurants to disclose imported meat on menus and require labeling. Deputy Secretary Richard Lyng says current testing and inspection already assure safety and truthful labeling, and the proposed laws would raise costs, be hard to enforce, and harm exports without added consumer benefit. The National Restaurant Association advocates labeling for any food containing imported meat and posting notices in restaurants.
