Vast Mississippian village dig uncovers record limestone finds
Brookyn area dig into half acre reveals 80 rectangular homes in a prehistoric Mississippian village near Cahokia Mounds. Excavation director Chuck Moffat of the American Bottoms Survey says the limestone abundance could reshape ideas on Mississippian farming and hunting peoples who inhabited the region 1 400 to 1 000 years ago. The site lies along planned Illinois 3 relocation, near a 19th century cemetery, with Cahokia Mounds five miles east as a potential center of Mississippian culture.
