Herrin Seeks New Doctors After Retirement of longtime physician
Herrin Mayor Fred Henderson urged attracting physicians to open offices in Herrin after Dr. W. J. Lewis retired ending nearly four decades of practice. Lewis tried March onward to find a successor, contacting about 40 of roughly 150 physicians listed by the national placement service and the A M A journal but received only eight to ten replies. He noted a current physician shortage and predicted more doctors over the next decade as population grows. Several Herrin youths are now in medical school.
