Oil prices dropped below 48 dollars a barrel after tensions between U S forces and Iraqi rebels eased. U S light crude for September delivery fell 84 cents to 47.86 on the N Y M E, retreating from Thursday's record close of 48.70. Futures remain volatile amid tight supplies and strong demand.
U S stocks rallied on Friday as oil fell below 50 a barrel from a record intraday high touched earlier. The Dow gained 69.32 points to 10110.14 with the S P 500 up 7.12 and the Nasdaq up 18.13 as the week closed higher for all major indexes amid bargain buying and concerns over inflation from oil.
On Friday grain futures gained at the Chicago Board of Trade with wheat up to $3.12 a bushel and corn up to $2.31, oats $1.41, while soybeans slipped to $5.94. On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange pork futures advanced and beef mixed. live cattle fell to 85.50 cents, feeder cattle up to 1.1477, lean hogs at 65.77, pork bellies at 94.20.
Eastern Cornbelt carcass prices rose with 0.5 to 0.9 inch bf ranges from 65.75 to 80.81. Illinois Direct Hogs sold 13,297 with trading steady to 1.00 lower on light demand. Hogs 300-400 lbs 41.00-43.00. 400-500 lbs 42.00-45.00. 500-600 lbs 45.00-47.00. over 600 lbs 46.00-48.00. Boars under 300 lbs 30.00-36.00. over 300 lbs 10.00-15.00.
