Dickcissel profile notes breed range and habits

The male dickcissel resembles a small meadowlark with a heavy bill and chestnut wing patch, while the female is like a streaked house sparrow with a yellow throat. It nests in 4-5 pale blue eggs in a ground level cup, favors open grain or hay fields, and winters in the tropics. Breeding ranges include Montana to the Great Lakes, south to Texas, with a former eastward distribution. The song is a repeating dick-dick-cissel. Information from Les Winkeler and the National Audubon Society Field Guide.
