Marion City Cuts Tax Levy for Third Straight Year
Marion City Council reduced the total tax levy to 268 050 for 1967, the third consecutive cut from 295 597 in 1965 and 285 807 in 1966, aided by higher sales tax receipts. Despite salary hikes for city workers, the council shaved the general corporate salaries by funding seven police positions from 30 840 to 19 935 via sales tax. Other levies saw adjustments for hospital bonds, library, garbage, playgrounds, retirement funds, and civil defense, with the council calling the move holding the line and noting a slightly lower rate next year due to higher valuation.
