SIU plans two area rezoning for university zone in Carbondale
Southern Illinois University will submit a new rezoning request within two weeks to create an university zone in two areas of Carbondale. The plan commission previously rejected a broader proposal, citing areas outside the intended expansion. Rendleman said the new request will cover only properties the university intends to buy, excluding blocks north of Hester Street and the Illinois Avenue corridor south of Mill Street. The boundaries would form east and west rectangles, aiming to prevent expensive buildings without state financing. Objections cited could depress property values and protect homeowner values. The university says it will pursue property acquisition regardless of rezoning outcomes.
