Nonunion labor rises in mining as unions shrink nationwide
Arch Mineral Corp. veteran Steve Carter now runs Knight Hawk Coal in Perry County using nonunion labor, arguing it improves employee treatment and direct cooperation with workers. Industry figures show mining jobs plummet from 450,000 UMWA members in the 1940s to under 80,000 today, with Illinois declines from over 50,000 miners in 1930 to under 4,000 in 2006.
