The Rev Francis Hamilton is named new minister at West Frankfort First Christian Church. He comes from University Heights Christian Church in Indianapolis and is a graduate of Lincoln Christian College. He lives with his wife Dorothy and daughters Susan and Peggy at 407 East Poplar Street Parsonage.
The Marion First Baptist Church marks its ninety eighth anniversary with Founders Day observance. Organized August 19 1865 with 19 charter members. Descendants of founders to be recognized during morning services. Pastor C R Walker to preach. Readings include first meeting minutes and church history. Ice cream social hosted by Challengers Class at Johnston City Methodist Church Saturday at p.m.
The Bethel AME Church of Carbondale will observe Women’s Day with a program at 3 p.m. Sunday. The public is invited.
South ministers move as stand on race causes friction. The Linden Alabama meeting prompted Rev Joe Patterson to resign over a color based membership question. Across the South and some in the North, clergy have left pulpits under pressure or by choice due to racial segregation debates. Church leaders report at least two dozen cases, with some facing threats and harassment while others depart for other posts or remain silent seeking peace. Bills of church leaders note that large denominations face the issue, with Methodist and Southern Baptist churches mentioned and Bishop Marvin Franklin noting a rise in departures though not a flood, as some join new posts or await reconciliation efforts.
Young people from the University Baptist Church in Carbondale bound for college will be honored at the evening service Sunday. The Rev. Jerreal Buchanan noted Southern Illinois University students will not be included this time as they will continue attending the church.
Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale will hold a single worship service for the next four Sundays at 8:30 a.m. Sunday school will meet at the regular 9:30 a.m. time. The two service schedule will resume September 15.

The Free Will Baptists convene Aug 20 to 23 in Carbondale with 25 churches from East St. Louis to Cairo. Opening day features Women’s Day. Wednesday hosts Wednesday session led by Mrs. Frances White of Carbondale. Ministers’ conference runs Thursday and Friday under Rev. A. W. Waters, with Mrs. Ollie White presiding Tuesday. John Thomas of Thomas School and Archibald Mosely of Kondale are among speakers. musical programs and city tour planned. Loyd Sumner invites all to attend sessions.
