Massive Northeast blackout shuts power grid across U S and Canada
A massive blackout hit U S and Canadian cities cutting reactors off line in Ohio and New York and prompting governors to mobilize troops. New York City and Toronto residents flooded streets while Broadway and transit halted. Amtrak suspended service and Mets game canceled as heat and outages disrupted daily life. Officials attributed the outage to a natural grid failure and not terrorism, with calls to modernize the electrical system.
