Leukemia cure defined after a 10 year relapse-free span
Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia who reach 10 years without relapse may be considered cured, researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study of 856 patients showed normal life expectancy without prior radiation, though those who had radiation require annual checkups. A separate Danish study found no major psychiatric disorders among childhood cancer survivors, except those with brain tumors.
