Benton Township Hearing Exposes Private House Built With Relief Aid
Four relief workers testified at an IPAC fact finding hearing in Benton that Benton officials diverted relief labor to construct a private home for Roy McCarty from July to October 1962. IPAC charged township Supervisor Hollaway, road commissioner Roy McCarty, and Supervisor Kirby Webb with certifying workers while they built the house at 802 Hickman St. The house project drew hours credited to relief programs but actual work occurred on the private residence. Workers described voluntary participation and mixed intentions amid broader political accusations in Franklin County.
