Illinois Coal Industry Faces Collapse After Court Ruling

The ruling absolves Zeigler and Old Ben Coal Co from health care costs for union miners, potentially leaving about 3,000 Southern Illinois workers without coverage. With 100,000 years of mining experience, the industry has dwindled from 1990s peaks to 3,500 current miners across 15 Illinois mines. Optimism rests on clean coal tech and gasification, including FutureGen, amid ongoing incentives and regulatory hurdles.
