Retiring Doctor W. I Lewis Ends Four Decades in Practice
Dr. W I Lewis of Herrin retires this month after nearly forty years in Southern Illinois medicine. Born 1893 in Missouri, he trained at Loyola and the National University of Arts and Science, then served in the Public Health Service and at the Physicians Radium Institute. He moved to Royalton, then Herrin in 1931, delivering up to 2,000 babies before 1948, and witnessed vast medical progress including antibiotics and surgical advances. He held leadership posts in Williamson County Medical Society, the Southern Illinois Medical Association and the Illinois Medical Society, and remained active in hospital and civic work while pondering the evolving doctor patient relationship.

Legislation Wins and Losses Highlight Session Review
State Senator John Gilbert lauds more achievements than defeats in the 1943 session, citing tax and public aid reforms, the creation of a new Department of Children and Family Services, and reforms aimed at curbing vote fraud. He notes defeats on revenue revisions and reapportionment, while Gov. Kerner’s vetoes and reform efforts shape a mixed scorecard for Southern Illinois.
