Louisiana enacts strongest abortion law in nation
The Louisiana Legislature, with no opposition in the House and a 35 to 1 Senate vote, passed a tight abortion bill signed by Gov. Edwards. It imposes parental consent or court order for under 15, under 18 requires notice, a 24 hour waiting period, mandated counseling, detailed fetal description by doctors, hospital abortion for first trimester, licensing fees, mandatory emergency transport, and hospital access within 15 minutes for complications. The measure is set to take effect Sept 8 despite expected legal challenges.
