Illinois Superfund sites face funding squeeze risk
Two Illinois watchdog groups warned at the Statehouse that 17 sites in Illinois risk being delayed without more federal cleanup funds and a reinstated pollution tax. They cited sites in Cook and LaSalle counties and Granite City, urging Bush to seek higher spending and a tax restore for funding. EPA officials defended funding as within national norms.

No-Risk Sites in Southern Illinois Highlight EPA Reports
Current and former Superfund sites in Southern Illinois are not listed as at risk for funding in a Thursday EPA report. Highlights include the Ida Energy Company site cleanup completed in 1991 after extensive removal of tanks and contaminated soils, and oil, PCB, and water treatment metrics. The Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge faces longstanding contamination with fish advisories in effect since 1984 and ongoing cleanup actions, with Diagraph Illinois Tool Works slated to address soil and groundwater contamination starting spring 2004. The Interior Department reports ongoing site assessments and planned cleanups at water towers, debris areas, and Crab Orchard Lake facilities.
