Rufous-sided towhee overview and range notes

The rufous sided towhee shows male black head and upperparts with white underparts and rufous flanks, females warm brown. It nests on the ground in dense cover with 3 to 6 lightly red brown spotted eggs. Range spans from British Columbia to Maine and south to California and Florida, winters south of southern BC and New England. The species varies in voice across West and East, and interbreeds with the Red eyed towhee and Spotted towhee where ranges meet. The name imitates its call, noted by Mark Catesby in 1731.
