Two De Soto Recruits Began Basic Training at Camp Chaffee
Albert D. Jones and Herbert R. Winger from De Soto joined the Fifth Armored Division for 14 weeks of basic training at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Jones, son of Mrs. Rebecca Jones, worked at Edison Electric, while Winger, son of Mrs. Blanche Winger, was a carpenter. They reported to Company C, 81st Medium Tank Battalion. The Fifth Armored Division, reactivated July 6 1948, earned a strong World War II record across six campaigns in Europe.
