Henderson and Shoemake Face Aggravated Assault Charges
Williamson County Assistant State's Atty. Robert J. Neely filed informations in Marion Circuit Court charging Herrin Mayor Fred Henderson and Alderman Tom Shoemake with aggravated assault and unlawful use of weapons. The charges stem from a Thursday night gunplay in Herrin that wounded passerby George Saliba. Henderson says he fired accidentally while aiming at Shoemake. Shoemake had boycotted a council meeting after a disputed statement about pay for landfill work. Saliba, hospitalized with a leg wound, is not pursuing charges at this time. The hearing is set for 9 a.m. August 14.
