Detainee appeals for freedom at Guantanamo hearings

Afghan prisoners bound and chained pleaded for release at Guantanamo Bay as U S military tribunals held open hearings. The 31 year old said he carried a Taliban rifle but never fought Americans, while the 49 year old claimed forced conscription by the militia. Both men described surrender to protect civilians and asserted a desire for humane treatment. The nine or tenth tribunal session to decide if detainees should remain enemy combatants or be freed drew media access but kept identities and classified information tightly controlled.
