The VFW plans a regional veterans reunion open to all service members including Vietnam era veterans. Organizer Kobler, a 1965 66 Army veteran, says 15000 plus local vets exist and the event aims to give back to communities. Carbondale vetoed Wal-Mart’s bid for a liquor license amid a license cap aimed at underage sales. Board members noted impact on price, local stores, and consumer duty, with dissent favoring lower prices. The decision goes to the Carbondale Liquor Commission for review.
Southern Illinois Humane Shelter faces an unusual week as goats appeared at the facility. Goats were dropped at the yard and later towed away by Carbondale Animal Control after owners could not manage them. Owner identification remains undisclosed and penalties include 30 dollars per goat plus 5 dollars daily boarding. In unrelated obituaries, Anna Smolak and Celeste Menzel are reported as deceased with funeral arrangements pending.
