Boil water orders rise as Illinois systems face breaks
Southern Illinois water districts issued boil orders this summer amid main breaks and low pressure. EPA official Charles Bell notes orders reflect risk, not confirmed contamination, with samples sent to Marion for testing. Officials cite aging galvanized lines, dry weather, and high consumption as drivers while new plants and plastic piping gradually reduce problems.
