Tammy Zywicki case endures as mother seeks justice
Fifteen years after Tammy Zywicki vanished on I-80 near LaSalle and was found dead in Missouri, her mother JoAnn Zywicki remains hopeful a confessor trucker, Bruce Mendenhall, may hold clues. Investigators pursue leads while acknowledging the case may stay unsolved.
Unsolved slaying of Tammy Zywicki anniversary noted
Aug 23 marks 15 years since Tammy Zywicki, 21, vanished after dropping her brother at Northwestern in Evanston on 1992. Her 1985 Pontiac broke down on I-80 near LaSalle, her body found nine days later near I 44 between Springfield and Joplin. Witness said a white male truck driver, 35-40, 6 feet, dark hair, was seen. Decatur mosque unites black and Middle Eastern Muslims
In Decatur the Masjid Wali Hasan Islamic Center hosts services where over 20 men pray together as women and girls observe. The mosque traces back to 1972 with Elijah Muhammad’s movement, later evolving under Warith Deen Mohammed and Imam Johnnie Shabazz to welcome immigrants from India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia alongside longtime African-American members. Mirza Baig, a 27-year resident and current board secretary, portrays the center as a shared, evolving faith space.
