Health officials have 28 north Florida counties under alert for West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus appeared in the Western Hemisphere in 1999 with hospitalizations and fatalities.
A fire on a fish processing vessel produced thick smoke that closed a Seattle area canal for several hours on Saturday. Four firefighters were injured lightly as crews contained the blaze by afternoon and evacuated two north shore businesses. Investigators planned to board Sunday to determine the cause, with no signs of foul play.
