Thrift chiefs travel to Hawaii on taxpayers’ dime

Indiana style stinginess made news as Gov. James R. Thompson’s budget director Robert L. Mandeville and deputy Richard Kolhauser fly to Honolulu for the National Association of State Budget Officers meeting. The trip, August conference in Hawaii includes around 870 dollars per person for roundtrip flight and hotel, with Mandeville’s wife and six of eight children described as paying vacation costs. Mandeville, long dubbed Dr No and Scrooge for cutting state agency spending, leaves Illinois with a reputation for frugality, while the trip draws eyebrows.
