A daily excerpt from the diaries of Corps of Discovery members covering May 1804 through September 1806, detailing early expedition notes, observations, and experiences as the expedition traversed unknown landscapes and documented encounters.
August 4 1804 Clark notes banks washing away and trees falling for a mile above a trading post site S within the region. Pedro Cruzatte a one eyed boatman of mixed French Omaha heritage entertained with a fiddle and stayed two years trading with the Mahars before continuity with the expedition.
Saluki shot putter Woods rose from SIU to Olympic level, placing second in 1968 and again in 1972 before aging out at 36. He recalls choosing shot put for strength and speed, detailing early marks of 63 and 67 feet and life after competition at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
A controlled blast demolished the Cape side of the old bridge while 50 reporters watched from the new span. Explosives were placed in eastern piers to sever the section, with debris to be cleared within 48 hours as demolition proceeds toward removing the entire bridge in months.
