Corn prices dip as rains lift Midwest crop prospects

Iowa elevators report July prices from 2.74 to 3.19 per bushel amid widespread good to excellent corn condition. Rain improved yields across much of the Corn Belt, though central western Iowa and parts of Nebraska and South Dakota missed some rains. Analysts note export demand and CCC sales actions shape prices and 1981-82 corn outlook. Russia likely to be a large grain importer next year, supporting U.S. exports while U.S. sales may lower prices if CCC liquidates.

Cattle prices still too low for producers to profit

Government projections show farmers and feedlot operators will earn little money from cattle for months. Despite some gains, prices for fed cattle do not cover production costs, though feedlot inventories and placements rise signaling more cattle headed for slaughter later in the year. Prices for Choice steers at Omaha around 67.5 to 68.25 per hundredweight, with May averages near 67.89, up from earlier months.
