Union County opens second rest stop on I 57 in Illinois
The Illinois Department of Transportation opened a 1.35 million rest area north of the I 57 and Rt 146 crossing in Union County. It is one of two open along the 300 mile route from Cairo to Chicago, the other near Peotone in Will County. Bids were received for a Whittington Franklin County site with Mitchell Contracting Co. of Herrin the low bidder at 1.83 million.

Regional water study to model Rend Lake system
A study of regional water distribution and policy will use the Rend Lake Intercity Water System as a model. The EDA funds a $51,000 contract with Harza Engineering with GERPDC coordinating the effort and representation from Mt. Vernon Carbondale and Marion plus local districts and state agencies. The project runs about a year and covers six focus areas including use policies, source depletion, expansion priorities, system design, growth controls, and monthly coordination.
