Three men from the State Water Survey Urbana began a one week preliminary silt survey of Crab Orchard Lake to assess whether a larger study is needed next year. Lead by associate engineer Bernt O Larsen the team includes William Sayers and Lowell Rofferts. The work, a cooperative project with the U S Fish and Wildlife Service Illinois State Water Survey U S Soil Conservation Service and Southern Illinois University, could affect local industry recreation and water use if heavy silting is found.

A 10 month old Murphysboro baby named Terry Lee Taylor swallowed an open safety pin while in a diaper change. The pin lodged in the esophagus above the stomach and doctors planned removal at Barnes hospital in St Louis. The child was rushed by ambulance with police escorts and admitted in guarded condition in the Barnes Children's Hospital. Two Couples Drown in Lake Near Sparta
Four African American youths and a fifth man drowned when a rowboat capsized at Midtown Country club lake near Sparta. Sgt. Robert Langham of Boca Raton and Staff Sgt. A War department telegram to Mrs. Rosa Hightower in Carbondale announced Staff Sgt. Lewis McNeill's death. A 1947 black business coupe believed used by a blond gunman in a Cobden service station robbery was found Tuesday in Wolf Lake by Union County Sheriff Earl Batson.
