President Obama and congressional leaders announced a historic agreement to avert the nation's first default. The plan cuts at least 2.4 trillion dollars in federal spending over a decade, extends the Treasury borrowing authority past the 2012 elections, and ends a perilous budget stalemate that threatened the economy and markets.
Sen. Dick Durbin says the Sunday debt limit agreement is not perfect but prevents a default and provides economic certainty as the nation recovers from a historic recession. The comment came in a Sunday night statement from the assistant Senate majority leader.
The city of Marion's water plant is buzzing again and could temporarily pour water into the city supply if the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency grants approval to resume production. See water page 4A.
Jackson County residents will face higher property tax bills this year as all but one district raise rates, with increases near 1 percent in some areas. Carbondale districts average a 0.5 percent rise, Murphysboro similar, while De Soto shows both high and low rates. First installment due Sept. 6. electronic payments accepted. Jackson County has over 70 taxing bodies and schools collect the largest share.
SIU Athletics reports 697 written commitments to Saluki Way totaling 9.7 million dollars. Pledges range from ten dollars to one million with one to five year payment plans. Four donors have dropped out totaling about fifty thousand dollars while no mass exodus is seen.
