McKeon to retire at end of term and backs Snyder bid
Illinois State Representative Larry McKeon the first openly gay member of the General Assembly said he will retire when his term ends in January due to health reasons. He recommended Jim Snyder to replace him on the November ballot with no Republican challenger and noted that public perceptions have changed since his 1996 election. He has battled AIDS and cancer though he says the cancer is in remission and plans to travel in a 34 foot motor home in retirement. Committeemen must nominate by August end.

Lewis given 30 months discharge for child abuse
Assistant Jackson County State's Attorney Mark Hamrock says the boy suffered severe beatings by Lewis on at least two occasions in November 2000. Defense argues injuries stem from a 10 foot fall while playing Tarzan with his mother and Lewis, with medical misdiagnoses blamed for later problems at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. Judge Kim Dahlen imposes a sentence aligned with a rejected plea, amid custody losses and family turmoil surrounding the boy.
